Madame Web Bombs at Box Office...how did this affect this week's FOMO?
Reviews of the new Madame Web movie are terrible with a 13% on Rotten Tomatoes. These reviews have killed the value of her first appearance in Spider-Man 210. I grabbed some screens from GoCollect below showing a drop by 50% in 2 years. As a huge Wolverine collector, my fingers are crossed that Deadpool 3 doesn’t stink.
$335 for a 9.0 when Dakota Johnson announced
Huge drop to $161 for a 9.0 after reviews this month [sad face]
Madame Web Trivia Question (answer at the bottom): How did Madame Web get her powers?
Exclusive Interview - Danny Coyle of deiseldancomics:
Danny Coyle doing his thing.
What is your origin story and where does your online name come from?
For the majority of my life, I worked with my dad as a diesel truck and trailer mechanic. So my online name carried over from my occupation and actually began as a gamertag on Xbox. When I discovered Instagram I started my account as "dieseldanart" because I wanted to be an artist but eventually I found myself having more fun sharing and talking about comic books.
What’s in your personal collection? What are you collecting, reading, or hunting right now?
I have a lot of independent publishers in my collection, mostly Image Comics but I always enjoy reading DC and occasionally some Marvel. At the moment on my read pile I have Batman: The Long Halloween trade, the new DSTLRY titles, and some Spawn to catch up on. What am I hunting? What aren't I hunting!? I guess I'm focused on completing Swamp Thing vol. 2, Animal Man vol. 1, Shade The Changing Man vol 2 because there is no complete collected edition for Shade. Loads more to list but I'll save everyone from having to read my long grocery list.
What are some valuable lessons you have learned along the way? Advice for someone looking to get into comic book selling?
People are always wanting a deal so don't be mad when they ask, unless it's an aggressively low offer, but also don't be that person that asks for 50% asking prices. For new sellers, don't be so attached to a book if you're going to sell it or the price you value the book at. Most people selling comics are fans who love the books they are selling, but sometimes they price with their heart and not with what the market values the book at.
What are the best platforms right now for selling?
Shortboxed is hands down the best platform to sell on. It's the easiest, fastest, safest way to buy a comic book. I've gotten plenty of books for my personal collection on Shortboxed and have only ever had a couple problems which were immediately addressed with no headaches. I can't say that about eBay or other platforms which have always been nightmares for me.
Do you have any predictions for 2024?
For secondary market trends, DC books will gain in popularity this year because of James Gunn's "Gunnverse" they won't do what Marvel books did at the height of Marvel spec but they'll definitely do numbers. I'm betting on characters like Animal Man and Swamp Thing. For the monthly consumer I think people will enjoy reading and buying more independent titles that are short complete series. It'll be the year of indie books!
What services does the comic book community need that currently don't exist?
There are already so many great services available that people can take advantage of when it comes to benefiting their collections and this hobby. People may not necessarily be aware of all of these services or products though. Something I would like to see that doesn't exist is a comic focused platform (app) that consolidates popular news and community news, a place where the community can make each other aware of everything cool and useful. A platform where we can chat and share about everything comics. Basically imagine if you combined Shortboxed with Discord, that's the dream.
Where can the community find you online?
Did you Know? Platinum Age Comics:
1902 Alphonse & Gaston Platinum Age comic book
The term "Platinum Age" is not as widely recognized or defined as the more commonly referenced Golden Age, Silver Age, or Bronze Age of comics. However, it would typically refer to the very earliest period of comic book publication, roughly from the late 1800s to the early 20th century (1897–1938).
During this time, comic strips and comic books as we know them today were still in their formative stages. Newspaper comic strips were gaining popularity, featuring characters like The Yellow Kid, created by Richard F. Outcault, which is often cited as one of the earliest examples of a comic strip. These early comics were often humorous and aimed at a broad audience.
In terms of comic books, the Platinum Age saw the publication of some of the earliest comic books, such as "The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck" by Rudolphe Töpffer, which is considered by many to be the first comic book ever published, dating back to 1837.

Madame Web Trivia Question Answer: Unlike Peter Parker and Mile Morales, Cassandra Webb (Madame Web) was born with the X-gene making her a mutant. She possesses psychic abilities including telepathy, clairvoyance, and prescience. She can also perform astral projection and appear to others in spirit form. Madame Web is cybernetically linked to a spider web-like support system to attend to her bodily needs.
