DID YOU KNOW

Jack Kirby was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army during the conflict. During his time in the military, Kirby used his artistic talents to create illustrations and instructional materials for various Army publications. This experience not only shaped his artistic style but also influenced some of his later comic book creations, particularly in his depiction of action-packed scenes and military themes in his work for characters like Captain America.

🧭 Jonny Quest - A Retrospective

1960’s Jonny and the crew

In the vast landscape of comic book lore, there are few characters as iconic and enduring as Jonny Quest. Originally introduced in the 1960s animated television series created by Doug Wildey, Jonny Quest has since become a beloved figure in pop culture, captivating audiences with his daring escapades and thrilling adventures. Over the years, Jonny Quest has also made his mark in the realm of comics, with various iterations and creative teams breathing new life into his timeless tales.

Recently, there has been exciting news in the world of Jonny Quest comics, as announced by Bleeding Cool. A new creative team, comprised of writer Joe Casey and artist Sebastian Piriz, is set to take the helm of the Jonny Quest comic series. With their combined talents and fresh perspectives, fans can anticipate a revitalization of the classic character, infused with modern sensibilities while staying true to the essence of what makes Jonny Quest so captivating.

One of the standout collectible issues in the Jonny Quest canon is undoubtedly "Jonny Quest #1" released in 1986 by COMICO Comics. This issue marked the character's return to the comic book world after a hiatus, and it reintroduced audiences to the intrepid adventurer and his loyal companions in stunning fashion. Written by William Messner-Loebs with art by Marc Hempel and Mark Wheatley, this inaugural issue set the stage for a new era of Jonny Quest comics, capturing the spirit of adventure that has always defined the character.

1986 Jonny Quest - The first comic from publisher COMICO

Another noteworthy addition to any Jonny Quest collector's shelf is "The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest #1" published by Dark Horse Comics in 1996. Serving as a tie-in to the animated series of the same name, this comic offered fans a deeper dive into Jonny’s world, expanding on the lore established in the show. With captivating artwork and engaging storytelling, this issue remains a cherished gem for fans of the franchise.

Jonny and Hadij kickin’ it in the 90’s

Of course, no retrospective on Jonny Quest comics would be complete without mentioning "Future Quest #1" released by DC Comics in 2016. This ambitious crossover event brought together various Hanna-Barbera characters, including Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, and the Herculoids, in an epic adventure spanning multiple dimensions. Helmed by writer Jeff Parker and featuring artwork by Evan Shaner, "Future Quest" breathed new life into classic characters while paying homage to their storied histories.

The beauty of Jonny Quest lies in its timeless appeal. Even decades after its inception, the adventures of Jonny, Hadji, Race Bannon, and Bandit continue to resonate with audiences of all ages. The themes of bravery, friendship, and exploration are universal, transcending generations and capturing the imagination of both young and old.

This Week’s Trivia Question (answer at the bottom): In the Jonny Quest animated series, which city does Hadji, Jonny's best friend and adopted brother, originally come from?
