It’s Super Bowl Weekend - Meet SuperPro! 🏈
In 1991, Marvel Comics gave birth to a hero who traded the spandex for shoulder pads and the secret lair for a locker room. Enter Phil Grayfield, once a gridiron gladiator of the NFL, with 12 amazing issues and a special edition comic.
Not to be outdone by his Marvel hero brethren, SuperPro had an interesting list of villains to fight on and off the gridiron:
Buck Sutter and the Head Hunters - Apparently, their MO was kidnapping players because they never got a fair shot at playing in the NFL themselves.
Instant Replay - An assassin with the ability to travel short distances through time.
And, of course, Quick Kick - A field-goal kicker turned evil ninja who appears in #2 of the series.
Interview with the Legendary Sandz from SandzGroup Collectibles!
Sandz, the Man!
When I got back into comic collecting, my very first experience was a YouTube auction hosted by Sandz. He was funny, knowledgable, and in a community known for gatekeeping, extremely welcoming. In the last few years he has always answered my dumb questions about pricing and obscure characters, and I am proud to feature him in the first FOMO LOCO interview:
What is your origin story and where does the Sandz Group name come from?
I’m a Virginian by way of Harlem, NYC. Sandz Group was actually a business name me and some fellow Fraternity Brothers started. When business plans fell through, I kept the name and most people began calling me Sandz. In the Fraternity world, Sandz means a person who came into the bond during the same time period as you.
What’s in your personal collection? What are you collecting, reading, or hunting right now?
I have a little of everything. I started collecting when I was a kid and eventually worked for a comic book store cleaning and stocking the shelves when I was only 13. I was underage so I got paid in comics.
Wolvie, Batman, Something is Killing the Children, Star Wars, and Miles primarily make up what I'm collecting and reading these days. As for hunting, well a little bit of everything, but buddy Nola got me hunting Dave Stevens!
What are some valuable lessons you have learned along the way? Advice for someone looking to get into comic book selling?
Much like any hobby or collectible, comics take up space and need to be cared for. Much like a pet, before you just go buy a comic, you want to buy some supplies to properly store and preserve that comic. Some people may look at this and say books are meant to be read and wear and tear will happen, but like I said if you are looking to collect comics that’s a step further than reading, so do your research.
As for selling - start on eBay, sign up for an account, learn how to pack and ship properly, and most importantly, treat this like a business. Far too often people see this as a hobby and ship things unprotected. Again, this is a hobby and books are great for reading but they are also an investment.
What are the best platforms right now for selling?
There is no one right platform for a seller, people are using all forms of social media as well as live events to sell products (not only comics). The key, in my opinion, is building a brand and being reliable. People want good products and they want to know they can trust their sellers. So whether its Ebay, Youtube, Whatnot, IG, Shortbox, Live Event or Con, be professional.
